Recipes to Punch up Your Protein!

One of the biggest challenges for patients who've had weight loss surgery (Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve and LAP-BAND) is getting enough protein without getting too many calories. While there are many good brands of protein bars and shakes out there, some patients have a hard time finding protein supplement that they enjoy. If this sounds like you, (or even if you just want to try something new), have a look at these simple tips and recipes to help boost the flavor of your protein supplement.

Flavor-Boosting Protein Tips

  • Use vanilla, almond or coconut extract to add flavor to store-bought protein shakes and to create your own custom flavors.
  • Freeze fat-free milk in ice cube trays to use in smoothies instead of plain ice. Milk adds protein and gives you a more ice cream-like consistency without added fat.
  • Blend non-fat Greek yogurt with your smoothie to add creaminess and extra protein to shakes.
  • If you can’t stand the taste of whey protein powder, try soy protein isolate powder. It’s virtually flavorless and is less likely to clump than the whey powder.

Then toss in some cooked shredded chicken for a complete meal.
