One of the biggest challenges for patients who've had weight loss surgery (Gastric Bypass, Gastric Sleeve and LAP-BAND) is getting enough protein without getting too many calories. While there are many good brands of protein bars and shakes out there, some patients have a hard time finding protein supplement that they enjoy. If this sounds like you, (or even if you just want to try something new), have a look at these simple tips and recipes to help boost the flavor of your protein supplement.
Flavor-Boosting Protein Tips
- Use vanilla, almond or coconut extract to add flavor to store-bought protein shakes and to create your own custom flavors.
- Freeze fat-free milk in ice cube trays to use in smoothies instead of plain ice. Milk adds protein and gives you a more ice cream-like consistency without added fat.
- Blend non-fat Greek yogurt with your smoothie to add creaminess and extra protein to shakes.
- If you can’t stand the taste of whey protein powder, try soy protein isolate powder. It’s virtually flavorless and is less likely to clump than the whey powder.
