The Sleeve Gastrectomy operation (also known as Gastric Sleeve) at the New Jersey Bariatric Center involves surgically narrowing the stomach to the width of a garden hose. (see diagram). The resulting small (approximate 50-100mL volume), narrow stomach helps patients eat much smaller portions of food, while allowing for normal digestion and absorption. Food consumed passes through the digestive tract in the usual order, allowing it to be fully absorbed in the body with no need to take protein supplements as in gastric bypass surgery. The Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure also has been shown to result in decreased hunger after surgery. The result of Sleeve Gastrectomy is less overall hunger, and satiety after eating smaller portions of food.
Life after Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery

- Visit Life after Surgery for more details.
Health Benefits of the Sleeve Gastrectomy
- Compared to Gastric Bypass , fewer complications
- No foreign body worries as the LAP-BAND® or REALIZE® Band
- No malabsorption worries as the Gastric Bypass
- The short-term results are very encouraging. Studies show very good weight loss results, low complication rates, and a significant reduction in postoperative hunger.
- Quality of life drastically improves for our patients, with surgery resolving or improving medical problems such as diabetes, hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, etc.
Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgery Recovery & Follow-up
- Surgery takes approximately two hours to perform.
- On average, our patients leave the hospital one to two days after gastric sleeve surgery.
- Return to work varies from one to three weeks depending on the type of work.
- No heavy lifting (more than 10lbs) is allowed for four to six weeks after surgery.
- You will have the support of our dedicated team of medical professionals who will work with you on nutrition, exercise, psychological, and physical therapy needs both before surgery and for the long-term.
Potential Concerns of Sleeve Gastrectomy
- The Sleeve Gastrectomy procedure is not as established as the Gastric Bypass and gastric band procedures. It has been performed as a stand-alone weight loss procedure for approximately the last 5 years, so longterm results are not yet known.
- The surgery is irreversible.
- Long term complications uncommon
