What is Laparoscopic Bariatric or Weight Loss Surgery?

In the early days of bariatric surgery, procedures were done by creating one large open incision in the abdomen. Today, the majority of surgeries are performed laparoscopically through about five small incisions in the abdomen.

During the procedure, a small video camera and surgical instruments are inserted through the incisions. The surgeon views the procedure on a video monitor. This approach is considered less invasive than open surgery, resulting in shorter hospital stays and fewer wound complications, such as infection, scarring or hernia.

Studies have found that patients who had laparoscopic gastric bypass, gastric sleeve or LAP-BAND® procedures experience less pain after surgery, resulting in easier breathing and lung function and higher overall oxygen levels. Patients who have laparoscopic surgery return more quickly to pre-surgical levels of activity than patients who have traditional open surgery.

New Jersey Bariatric Center® surgeons have all completed recognized fellowships in advanced laparoscopic surgery and perform all weight loss surgery procedures laparoscopically.

New Jersey Bariatric Center® surgeons were the first in New Jersey to perform the groundbreaking single-incision gastric band surgery. During this procedure, surgeons reduce the operative site to a single incision around the belly button. This frequently results in minimal patient discomfort and a barely visible scar compared to traditional laparoscopic band surgery. Single incision surgery is only done for the band procedure and not all patients are candidates. The doctors will evaluate each case individually to determine whether a patient is a candidate.
