New Jersey Bariatric Center Psychologists

The physical change that accompanies bariatric surgery is just one part of a successful approach to surgical weight loss. The patients who see the best results go through a mental change as well. Bariatric surgery patients must develop a whole new relationship with food and find ways to overcome the other emotional hurdles that have blocked past attempts at weight loss. New Jersey Bariatric Center understands this and has psychologists trained in the treatment of the bariatric patient. At any time in the pre- and post-surgery process, patients are encouraged to use this valuable resource to help them along their weight loss journey.

Erika January, Ph.D.

Dr. January is a licensed psychologist in New Jersey and New York. She joined the staff of Atlantic Health’s Weight and Wellness Center at Overlook Hospital in 2010. Dr. January has worked in many different settings with a variety of populations and concerns.

A graduate of Haverford College with a Bachelor of Arts degree, Dr. January received an M.A. from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from Fordham University (2003). She received advanced training in eating disorders, addictions and compulsions at the William Alanson White Institute of Psychiatry, Psychoanalysis & Psychology in New York City. Prior to working in the Weight and Wellness Center at Overlook, Dr. January worked in several college counseling centers, an adolescent treatment center and in private practice.

Dr. January writes a column for NJBC about our relationship with food and healthy living. She enjoys helping people understand and change their complex relationships with food in order to live a healthier, happier life.
