The biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is a
bariatric surgery procedure that combines the restriction of the gastric sleeve with the malabsorption qualities of the gastric bypass.
The result is greater weight loss than
gastric bypass,
gastric sleeve or
gastric band, with studies showing that patients who have biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch achieve 60 to 70 percent of excess weight loss or more at five-year follow up.* In the past, duodenal switch has been recommended for patients with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 50, but it can also be performed on patients with a BMI of 40 or above.
