The adjustable gastric balloon is a non-surgical weight loss option for people who do not qualify for or do not want surgery. It is designed for patients between the age of 22 and 65 with a body mass index (BMI) between 30-40. Due to its adjustability feature, the balloon size can be customized to fit patients needs and treatment time can be extended.
How the Gastric Balloon Works
The Spatz adjustable gastric balloon helps you lose weight by taking up about ⅓ of the space in your stomach so you can eat less and feel full. It is placed into the stomach during a short, non-surgical procedure known as an endoscopy. Once the balloon is inserted, treatment lasts for 8 months and includes monthly nutritional counseling. Depending on your body’s needs, your doctor can increase your balloon’s volume to help restart the balloon’s effect on your weight which is also done through an endoscopy. After 8 months of therapy, the balloon is removed similar to the process for the insertion – through an endoscopy. It will take about 15 minutes followed by a 1 hour recovery time. After the removal, you will continue with 6 more months of personalized follow-up with your New Jersey Bariatric Center medical team to help maintain your weight loss.
