Find Out How Much Weight You Could Lose with GLP-1 Injections and Oral Medications

Prescription weight loss medications and injections such as GLP-1s Wegovy® and Zepbound® support weight loss by decreasing hunger while simultaneously increasing feelings of satiety, leading to reduced food intake and overall absorption of calories.

When deciding which weight loss medication, GLP-1 injection or GLP-1 pill is right for you, it's important to consider the average weight loss, side effects and obesity-related conditions. On average, patients lose between 10-20% of their body weight as early as 6 months with prescription weight loss medications.

Frequently Asked Questions About GLP-1 Medical Weight Loss

Get answers to questions about medical weight loss, GLP-1 weight loss medications and our comprehensive program.

What does membership at New Jersey Bariatric Center® cost?

How long will it take for me to see results?

Weight loss with medication will happen gradually. Injections like Wegovy® and Zepbound® are often started at a lower dose to help your body get used to the active ingredients and limit side effects. Most patients start losing weight at around 2-3 weeks but individual results may vary.

Are weight loss medications safe for my specific health conditions?

If you have weight related medical conditions like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or sleep apnea, FDA‑approved weight loss medications can improve these conditions by helping with sustained weight loss. However, safety depends on your individual history, including heart disease, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, thyroid cancers, kidney or liver disease, and mental health conditions. It’s important to have a conversation with your doctor to find the best fit for you.

Does New Jersey Bariatric Center® prescribe weight loss medications other than GLP-1s like Wegovy® and Zepbound®?

Yes. Our physicians prescribe FDA-approved GLP-1 medications as well as other prescription weight loss medications based on your individual health history. While GLP-1 medications like Wegovy® (semaglutide) and Zepbound® (tirzepatide) are the most effective options currently available and are right for most of our patients, they are not appropriate for everyone. For patients who cannot take GLP-1 medications — or for whom a different approach makes more clinical sense — our board-certified physicians may prescribe other FDA-approved weight loss medications, including:

Qsymia® (phentermine/topiramate) — an oral combination medication approved for long-term weight management

Contrave® (naltrexone/bupropion) — an oral combination medication approved for chronic weight management

Your doctor will review your full medical history, current medications, and weight loss goals to determine which medication is the safest and most effective fit for you. Weight loss treatment is not one-size-fits-all, and our role is to match you with the right option — not the most popular one.

Will my insurance cover weight loss medications, and what are my options if it does not?

Insurance coverage for prescription weight loss medications varies by plan. We'll help you verify which medications your insurance covers. If your plan doesn't cover weight loss medications, the new Wegovy® pill offers a more affordable self-pay option, plus manufacturer savings programs may be available.

Can I take GLP-1 medications like Zepbound® or Wegovy® during perimenopause and menopause, and will they help with menopausal weight gain?

Yes, weight loss medications like GLP-1 receptor agonists (Zepbound® & Wegovy®) can be prescribed during menopause and may help manage menopausal weight gain. However, they work best as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that will include dietary changes, and exercise.
