Non-Surgical Bariatric Procedure
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty
Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
Discover the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG), a non-surgical bariatric procedure for weight loss at the New Jersey Bariatric Center®.
The procedure, performed at a surgery center in New Jersey, is designed for people with a BMI between 30 and 40 who either do not qualify for bariatric surgery or would prefer to take a nonsurgical approach to weight loss. At New Jersey Bariatric Center®, surgeons performing the ESG procedure use an endoscope, a flexible tube with a camera and surgical instruments, to reduce the size of the stomach. This procedure has been shown to allow for more weight loss than diet and exercise alone.

How You Lose Weight
The endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, ESG, procedure assists in weight loss by reducing the size of the stomach. During the ESG, when the surgeon makes the stomach smaller, the hunger hormone, ghrelin, is reduced leading to faster satiety or feelings of fullness. Patients also consume fewer calories following an ESG due to the smaller size of the stomach.
At the New Jersey Bariatric Center® a surgeon performs ESG by inserting a thin instrument into the throat and stitches part of the stomach closed, altering the sizeof the stomach for weight loss. This allows for more weight loss than diet and exercise alone, and is less invasive than surgery. Patients will meet with their doctor and registered dietitian for personalized counseling regularly to monitor their weight loss.

Who Qualifies for ESG?
To qualify for endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, patients should have a BMI (body mass index) between 30 and 40. For patients who have a higher BMI but are not good candidates for surgery such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, the ESG may also be a good fit for them.

Recovery & Follow-Up
Most patients who undergo an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty can go home the same day as the procedure. For the first week, patients will follow a liquid diet that includes protein shakes while the stomach heals. Following this, patients can then move on to soft foods and eventually work their way back to eating solid foods.
Following the ESG, patients can expect to meet with your surgeon and dietitian 1 week postoperatively and then every month following that. This is important not only to track progress and healing but also to offer support and guidance throughout the weight loss journey.

Benefits & Risks
An ESG procedure can help patients lose between 12 and 20% of excess body weight. Getting to and maintaining a healthy weight can not only have the potential to increase longevity but also helps patients to control or eliminate obesity related health concerns like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. As with any weight loss procedure, patients obtain the best results when the procedure is paired with a healthy diet, regular exercise program and support.
It is also possible for the ESG procedure to be reversed. Since the surgeon changes the shape of the stomach using sutures that safely remain in the body, it is possible to reverse the procedure by cutting and removing the sutures, depending on the situation.
As with any bariatric procedure, there are also risks, however since the procedure is minimally invasive, with no surgical incisions, the risk of complications is less. Complications can include bleeding, infections, leaks and more.
Note: Currently, most insurance plans do not cover the ESG procedure. New Jersey Bariatric Center® offers a self-pay option for people interested in the Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty procedure.
