Weight loss is not easy. If you’ve struggled with diets in the past and found yourself giving up because you felt hungry or deprived, you may be a good candidate for FDA-approved prescription weight loss medications. FDA-approved weight loss medications are used as a tool to help decrease hunger and cravings in conjunction with nutritional counseling to help you reach and maintain a healthier weight. Prescription weight loss drugs are not meant to be used indefinitely but are used to give you time to focus on developing healthy lifestyle habits. In conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet, increased physical activity and nutritional counseling, weight loss medication has been shown to help patients with their weight loss goals.
Are Prescription Weight Loss Medications Right For Me?
Prescription weight loss medications are not appropriate for everybody. Weight loss medications are typically prescribed for obese patients who have been unable to lose weight through diet and exercise alone or for those who are overweight and are suffering from serious weight-related illnesses, like diabetes. Prescription weight loss drugs are not intended for cosmetic weight loss. Patients must be over the age of 18 and also meet one of the following Body Mass Index requirements:
- Have a BMI of 30 or greater, or
- Have a BMI of 27 or more with at least one weight-related medical condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol

The clinical team will review your individual medical history and will want to know about any other medications you’re taking. The New Jersey Bariatric Center® doctor will also talk to you about possible side effects of the medications so you can make an informed decision. The doctor will use this clinical review to help determine which FDA-approved weight loss medication is best for you.
