I tried lots of different diets to lose weight over the past 15 years. My weight would bounce up and down but it wasn’t until my medical doctor laid everything on the line for me that I realized I needed to up my game. He tricked me into coming to see him for some other reason and instead showed me my weight, LDL cholesterol and blood sugar levels over a four-year period. Those numbers were all going in one direction – up. That’s when he told me I should consider weight loss surgery. “Do it or you’ll be dead by 50,” he said, and it was like someone threw a bucket of ice water in my face. Now all I can think is “Why didn’t I do this sooner?” I lost 104 pounds and I know I couldn’t have done it without the surgery. Thanks to the weight loss, I go to the gym three to four times a week to stay fit. I’ve changed my eating habits and everything about my life has changed with it. I’m in better health and happier with myself than I have been in years. In fact, three of my friends have had or are about to have surgery with the New Jersey Bariatric Center doctors because they’ve seen how well I did with the surgery. I’m living life to the fullest and I couldn’t be happier.
*According to national studies, bariatric surgery results in an average weight loss of 55-80 percent of excess body weight. Excess weight is the amount of weight one needs to lose in order to have a “healthy” BMI of 25.
