GASTRIC SLEEVE SURGERY

I began gaining weight about 19 years ago. I had gone to Israel to study abroad and there was so much kosher food available everywhere. I was literally like a kid in a candy store. In addition, I was in Jerusalem where there was very good public transportation, so I wasn’t walking around as much. I tried gyms, Optavia, Weight Watchers, a personal trainer, and the South Beach Diet. Nothing stuck because I wasn't ready and didn't have the proper support.

At my annual check-up when I had just turned 36, I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol and was put on medication. I got very nervous and knew that I had to do something because I needed to be around for my wonderful husband and children. My doctor suggested I see a bariatric surgeon and I listened but was extremely uncertain with the decision initially.

Gastric sleeve surgery has given me a second chance. Yes, being skinnier is really nice, feeling sexy doesn't hurt but the main thing is being healthy. I am able to do so much more. I can hike, I can stand on a chair to open a window or hang up a poster (I'm a teacher) and hop back down and continue teaching. I can walk up a hill without feeling totally out of breath.

It's literally life-changing and I am eternally grateful. Dr. Goyal has always treated me with respect. He never laughed at any of my questions and answered me sincerely, even when I asked if I'd ever be able to eat ice cream again. The registered dietitians, the PA and everyone else I have dealt with at New Jersey Bariatric Center have been nothing but friendly, patient, knowledgeable and kind. Eight days after my gastric sleeve surgery I was told I no longer need to take meds for blood pressure. I just about cried. I'm not on any medication for physical health. My husband is so happy that I can do more and he mentions that he sees how hard I'm trying. I can now shop in any store I want for clothing and I feel great!

I have recommended NJBC to others. One of the things I like about NJBC is that the facility is clean and comfortable. Also, they have many things that a bariatric patient needs from protein to vitamins to protein snacks. Not to mention the virtual support group ‘Tuesday Talks’ meetings which I really miss attending in person since the pandemic.
