I found New Jersey Bariatric Center® through their online webinars. After having gastric sleeve surgery with them and losing 140 lbs I had excess skin around my abdomen. I was happy with my weight loss results however, the excess skin was causing me discomfort to the point where I developed rashes and had difficulty wearing clothes. While attending one of NJBC’s virtual support group meetings, I learned that they also offer a service to remove excess skin called a panniculectomy.
What is Panniculectomy Surgery and How Did I Qualify?
A panniculectomy is a reconstructive surgical procedure that removes sagging or excess skin from your lower belly, called a pannus. This causes an apron-like overhang. To qualify for a panniculectomy, I had to maintain my weight for 6-18 months, which I did. The excess skin around my abdomen had to actively cause medical issues, which it did.
Deciding to Move Forward with a Panniculectomy
After my gastric sleeve surgery and 12 months of losing weight, summer came around and I was eager to wear clothing in my "new, smaller size". I started noticing that the excess skin from the weight I had lost was protruding out of my swimsuits and other summer wear. It became uncomfortable and the heat in the summer made the discomfort worse which led to other skin problems. Then I decided to see if a panniculectomy was right for me.
After speaking with my NJBC doctor and determining that I qualified, I went ahead with the procedure to have my surgeon remove the excess skin from my abdominal area. After the panniculectomy, the medical issues I experienced with my skin were successfully addressed. This caused a lengthy recovery and healing process that was well worth the effort. I now have the freedom to move without feeling uncomfortable. I feel more confident going out in any season, not just summer.
How the NJBC Team Helped Me Reach My Health Goals
The NJBC staff has been an amazing resource for medical and nutritional information. I attend their monthly Tuesday Talks virtual support group meetings which have been an invaluable resource. NJBC made requesting a panniculectomy and the insurance process easy.
The Insurance Coverage Process
Once it came to the insurance process, I would put off asking questions. I was afraid of my coverage being rejected by my insurance company. But I was pleasantly surprised by how quickly my insurance was approved. The NJBC staff moved forward with the process confidently. They had to take pictures of my stomach area for insurance purposes and they never made me feel self conscious.

FAQs about a Panniculectomy
- Is a panniculectomy covered by insurance?
Insurance may cover a panniculectomy if it’s medically necessary due to health issues the excess skin can cause. You should also meet the qualifications. Insurers usually require prior authorization and documented proof of medical necessity. At NJBC, we verify coverage prior to your consultation, as there are no self-pay options. During your consultation, we review specific insurance criteria and take clinical photos. Then patients complete their follow up appointments with one of our physician assistants. After the follow up appointment, we draft a letter of medical necessity. Then we submit it to the insurance provider along with the clinical photos. We wait for a formal approval before initiating any pre-operative testing.
- How can I get approved for a panniculectomy?
To get approved for a panniculectomy, you should meet these qualifications:
- The excess skin extends to the pelvis after significant weight loss and is causing medical problems.
- You’ve maintained your weight for at least 6 months.
- You’ve maintained your health (blood sugar, blood pressure, etc.).
- Your BMI is within normal range or is a maximum BMI of 30-35.
- Will my stomach be flat after a panniculectomy?
Your lower stomach will be significantly flatter and smoother after a panniculectomy. This is because of the excess skin removal. However, it does not tighten muscles or contour the upper abdomen like a tummy tuck. The purpose of a panniculectomy is to remove the excess skin to address the medical issues it was causing such as lower back pain, discomfort, sores and rashes from skin-to-skin contact, and difficulty with hygiene¹. This procedure may be a good option for you if your excess skin is affecting your day-to-day activities and your overall well-being.
- What’s the difference between a tummy tuck and panniculectomy?
A panniculectomy is a reconstructive surgery of excess skin removal. It doesn't tighten the muscles. A tummy tuck is a cosmetic surgery where it flattens and sculpts the abdomen aesthetically. It tightens the muscles.
