Dr. Ajay Goyal is founder of and surgeon at New Jersey Bariatric Center® and is also Director of Bariatric Surgery and Associate Director of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center in Summit, New Jersey. With thousands of successful laparoscopic gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, gastric band and revision surgeries and laparoscopic general surgery procedures completed, Dr. Goyal is a leader in the field of laparoscopic bariatric and general surgery. Dr. Goyal was among the first bariatric surgeons in the country to employ a multidisciplinary team approach to weight loss, including nutritional, psychological and exercise counseling. His dedication to aggressive preoperative evaluation and postoperative follow-up has enabled Dr. Goyal to maintain a lower-than-average complication and zero mortality rate throughout his career.
Dr. Goyal is a sought-after speaker for his expertise in the field of bariatric surgery and has been interviewed by national and local news organizations, including CNN’s The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer and Hoboken magazine. In 2009, Overlook Medical Center honored him with the Physician Excellence Award. New Jersey Monthly magazine named Dr. Goyal one of the top doctors for bariatric surgery in 2010 and 2015. Under his leadership, New Jersey Bariatric Center® was designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery in 2006. He was also influential in Overlook Medical Center’s gaining accreditation by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) and subsequent re-designation.
Dr. Goyal is board certified by the American Board of Surgery. He earned his medical degree at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn and completed a five-year surgical residency at New York Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Afterward, Dr. Goyal completed an American Society of Bariatric Surgery-approved fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Bariatric and General Surgery at the Institute for the Minimally Invasive Surgery at Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, New York. During his fellowship, he was involved in initial studies that examined the use of robotics in bariatric and general surgery.
Dr. Goyal is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, the Medical Society of New Jersey and the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons. He has presented the results of his research in the field of bariatric and general surgery at several national conferences.
