Adolescent Bariatric Surgery

The prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents is rapidly increasing. As a result, weight-related illnesses in children and adolescents are also on the rise. A mounting body of evidence supports the use of weight loss surgery for carefully selected adolescents with obesity.

If your child is an adolescent between the ages of 15 and 18, they may be eligible for weight loss surgery through a study being conducted by New Jersey Bariatric Center® surgeons at Atlantic Health’s Overlook Medical Center.
Why the Study?
The goal of this study is to establish the efficacy of bariatric surgery in adolescent patients between the ages of 15-18 years old. The study will evaluate improvement in co-morbid conditions, quality of life, and lower BMI over a 2-year time span. The surgeries offered are gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. Improvement in weight and obesity-associated comorbidities will be measured at specific time intervals after surgery.
Who Qualifies?
You must be between the ages of 15 and 18 years old, and meet the requirements for surgery, including having a body mass index (BMI) over 40 with severe obesity-associated comorbidities (i.e. diabetes mellitus, hypertension, sleep apnea, coronary artery disease, fatty liver disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, gastroesophageal reflux disease, dyslipidemia).
