Bariatric surgery has long been considered a safe and effective option for obese patients to improve their health and increase longevity. Current guidelines restrict surgery to patients with a Body Mass Index [BMI] over 40 or a BMI over 35 with obesity-related illnesses. If you are interested in weight loss surgery but do not qualify because your BMI falls below the current guidelines, you may be eligible for weight loss surgery through a low BMI study conducted by New Jersey Bariatric Center® surgeons at Atlantic Health’s Overlook Medical Center.
Why the Study?
The current bariatric surgical guidelines that determine a patient’s qualification were established in 1991 and are considered outdated due to their limitation of including only patients with a BMI over 40 or a BMI over 35 with obesity-related conditions for surgical procedures like gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy. The low BMI study is designed to document the benefits of bariatric surgery and the necessity for procedures like gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy to be available to a wider range of patients in the hopes of improving and/or resolving their long-term obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension.
The study, led by Principal Navigator Dr. Ajay Goyal, Founder of New Jersey Bariatric Center and Director of Bariatric Surgery at Overlook Medical Center, examines the effectiveness of bariatric surgical procedures – Gastric Bypass and Sleeve Gastrectomy – for patients with a BMI of 30-35.
Patients with a BMI between 30 and 34.9 who have obesity-related condition such as sleep apnea, diabetes or hypertension or those who have a BMI that’s greater than 35 without an obesity-related illness can qualify for this study.
Patients who qualify for the low-BMI study will have gastric bypass or the sleeve gastrectomy procedure at Overlook Medical Center in Summit. The hospital has been accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program for its record of providing a safe environment with high-quality care to its patients resulting in successful outcomes. Applicants 18 and older, male or female, qualify for the study and there is no deadline to apply.
