Low BMI
Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery has long been considered a safe and effective option for people struggling with obesity to improve their health and sustain weight loss. Current guidelines restrict weight loss surgery to patients with a Body Mass Index [BMI] of 40 and above or a BMI of 35 and above with obesity-related illnesses. If you are interested in weight loss surgery, but do not qualify because your BMI falls below the current guidelines, you may be eligible for weight loss surgery through a low BMI study conducted by New Jersey Bariatric Center® surgeons at Atlantic Health’s Overlook Medical Center.
The study, led by Principal Navigator Dr. Ajay Goyal, Founder of New Jersey Bariatric Center and Director of Bariatric Surgery at Overlook Medical Center, examines the effectiveness of bariatric surgical procedures – Gastric Bypass and Gastric Sleeve – for patients with a BMI of 30-35.

Why the Study?
The current bariatric surgery guidelines that determine a patient’s qualification were established in 1991. The low BMI study is designed to document the benefits of bariatric surgery and the necessity for procedures like gastric bypass and gastric sleeve to be available to a range of patients in the hopes of improving and/or resolving their long-term obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes and hypertension.
Who Qualifies?
Patients with a BMI between 30 and 34.9 who have obesity-related conditions such as sleep apnea, diabetes or hypertension or those who have a BMI that’s greater than 35 without an obesity-related illness can qualify for this study.

Patients who qualify for the low-BMI study will have gastric bypass or the gastric sleeve procedure at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ. The hospital is accredited by the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program for its record of providing a safe environment with high-quality care to its patients resulting in successful outcomes. Applicants 18 and older, male or female, qualify for the study, and there is no deadline to apply.
